Plant breeder, Richard Diener of Kentfield, Marin County, California,
worked on improving the old canning variety 'Trophy,' and introduced his
'Diener' tomato in 1917. They are likely related by a common ancestry.
He advertised 'Diener' in various trade publications, sold it through
his company's own seed catalog, and sold stock to other seed catalogers
around the country. Seeds obtained by Craig Lehoullier from the USDA. Plants produce decent crops of HUGE, 1-3 lbs., well-shaped, very meaty, crimson-red, oblate beefsteak tomatoes with few seeds and are superbly flavored. This makes them a good choice for fresh slicing, as well
as for processing. Blight, drought and crack resistant. A good choice for growing GIANT tomatoes.
