Rutgers was developed by the Campbell Soup Company in 1928 from a cross of Marglobe and J.T.D. The variety was introduced in 1934 by Rutgers University to produce a heavy crop of smooth, bright-red fruit. Rutgers Improved is a Rutgers-type tomato with additional disease resistance.
